Project Launch

Meet KideoPlayer: Family safe YouTube

KideoPlayer!

Today we are launching KideoPlayer. (Go ahead, click it!) A fun and safe way to "channel surf" YouTube.

the backstory

As a creatively-focused web nerd and as a parent of two young boys under the age of 2, I (@meat99 to my Tweet peeps) try to keep my family engaged with what is happening online, including interacting with, sharing and viewing of safe content. Having sat down to try and find this safe content with my boys a couple of times now, I can tell you it is not easy to locate. If you search long enough for YouTube content that is appropriate, it always returns search results with wonderful gems to share, but, they are usually sitting right next to something questionable - if not - down right offensive.

I was amazed to see how little has been done to help curate they sea of online video content in a way that makes it easy, interesting, and fun for parents and kids to experience together. Online video and simple interactivity can be a great source of entertainment and learning for the whole family. Someone just needs to care enough to make it so.

how it works

I will spend my free time sourcing, identifying and curating the safest, most educational (and most FUN) YouTube videos I can find. This ongoing list of videos will be served up in a simple little interactive package that I can sit down and play with my boys. I call this package "KideoPlayer."

And since I'm doing this online (and the web is as social as social can be) you get the benefit of all my hard work. Yay!

how KideoPlayer is interactive

KideoPlayer is based on POKE's UPL8.TV framework (@neonarcade's brainchild) It allows for easy video surfing by using your keyboard (spacebar) to "skip" forward to the next interesting thing. UPL8 is also cool because you can search YouTube using the URL field. For example, entering http://upl8.tv/hamster+dance basically rolls your own rediculous hamster dance mash up channel. Pure poetry.

Ok, back to kids...

KideoPlayer works the same way. Only different.  :)  It seems that  YouTube's G-Rated filter has some flaws. You see, KideoPlayer can't reliably search only "Safe" areas of YouTube right from the URL bar as some questionable content still sneaks through.  As such, we've built in a work-around.

Typing http://kideoplayer.com/babyeinstein still executes a search. The only difference is that it searches "locally" — only sifting through the library of videos that I am curating. Neat huh? Just by typing that you've rolled your very own "Baby Einstein" channel. From there, you can keep using it like the regular KideoPlayer features, and use the spacebar to get to the next Baby Einstein video (in this case). Bear with us! As I tag more video from behind the scenes, these search queries will get more and more robust.

As parents, it is up to us to be informed about what and how our children play and to make appropriate choices on their behalf. Fortunately, there are many tools and resources that we as parents can utilize to be better parents in the information age. Perhaps someday, this will be one of them.

In the meantime, enjoy! Oh, and remember parents - watch with your kids and slap the spacebar for the next clip!

Love,

Tom and your friends at POKE.

Great idea, fun, fun, FUN!

Catherine Ventura : Saturday, 14 February 2009

Fantastic! What about one for tweens? @venndiagram8

Mark : Sunday, 15 February 2009

Hi. This is a great! I did find a 'hole'...my son likes the 'Charlie Bit My Finger' about a boy and his baby brother. If I append 'charliebitmyfinger' to the url I got an explicit rap video with lyrics and images that I imagine are not what you were aiming for. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks for the site and we love it!

Tom : Tuesday, 17 February 2009

Hey Mark. Thanks so much for pointing the hole out. I think we've got it fixed now. Let us know!! / t

Michelle : Thursday, 19 February 2009

This is fantastic! I never let my kids get on You Tube because watching the Wonder Pets suddenly turned into watching the Wonder Pets get slaughtered. Thank you! Thank you!

Sjo : Thursday, 19 February 2009

Brilliant! My son will love this.

I'm so against internet filtering and censoring. And then I had kids. So now I thank you! I ran into this exact issue last night with the 4 year old. 'Related Videos' aren't necessarily targeting the same age demographic.

I love the kid friendly screen, the simple way to move forwards and the way you watch what's on or you make the simple decision to go on...no channels to change, no risk of finding the wrong content. Thanks

Lawrence : Thursday, 12 March 2009

Excelent idea. But must be internationalized.

Person : Sunday, 15 March 2009

Great idea. I'm not interested in censorship, but not having to manually find something (iee. the simplicity) is great for very young children. Local verisons whould be nice, but I guess it's hard unless you "open up" everything (and that has its disadvantages).

Thank you so much for your work, Im a Canadian living in Japan with my 2 kids, this is just great, whenever we searched something on youtube most times we got good stuff but sometimes someone had dubbed it with a voice over with fowel language..Thanks again...

Ofer : Sunday, 15 March 2009

This is great! You are truly targeting a real issue here. Yet one thing is missing, IMHO: children often tend to ask for instant replays...

Venkat : Monday, 16 March 2009

Thanks a lot

Ofer : Monday, 16 March 2009

Great idea! but one issue missing, IMHO, is that kids often request instant replays...

Nick : Tuesday, 17 March 2009

Very good idea, but the interface is not so nice. You should've used more "childish" colors, not plain black. There's too much black in that window and it doesn't work in Firefox. Favourites would be nice because kids want to replay some videos and currently there is not way doing that and if the kid asks for a replay... the parents are doomed. :P Good luck!

Bart : Thursday, 19 March 2009

Fantastic, thanks so much for your efforts. Is there anything you can do to get it working in the Wii browser? I'd love to put KideoPlayer on in the living room :) The Wii browser (a Version of the Opera browser) supports up to Flash 7. Youtube videos work fine when played directly on Youtube, but the Kideoplayer just stays "loading". Not Youtube's loading graphic either. Feel free to contact me.

Mamacita : Friday, 20 March 2009

Really? Seriously? When my 6-year-old daughter and I hit the hamster dance we got a video that included inappropriate cuss words and who knows what else after I turned it off.

Rafael : Monday, 23 March 2009

Oi gente boa

Brittanie : Tuesday, 24 March 2009

Great idea! I just blogged about it on http://www.kiddesktop.com/blog/, as something that parents can include on their child's KidDesktop Activity Bar! If parents use Kideoplayer with KidDesktop, there is the added bonus of kids not being able to click away to an unknown website, as well as the rest of a parent's computer being safe from curious mouse and keyboard clicks. Also, I did not have a problem using it with Firefox. Nick, if you check back here: what type of problem did you have?

Alessio Sperlinga : Friday, 27 March 2009

Gregarious Narain : Monday, 13 April 2009

Wonderful job and much needed, thanks to you and the folks at Poke for putting this together!

bigdaddykane : Friday, 24 April 2009

thanks for this, its a lifesaver! The only suggestions I have is a more kid friendly interface and yes being able to replay is a must with young ones.

This is fantastic for my kids, allowed us to cancel our expensive satellite (they prefer this site to regular tv) Something that would make this all that much better would be a full screen mode. Is that in the works? Thanks!
